JUNE 30, 2010 - Action Alert:
PMP’s Urge Senate to Seize Moment on Home Star
• On June 29, with a bipartisan vote of 66 to 33, the Senate moved toward a final vote (and what is believed by many will be ultimate approval) of the much-anticipated small business jobs bill.
• Technically, what the Senate did was to approve a motion ending debate and move to a vote (following an additional 30 hours of debate) on HR 5297, the Small Business Lending Fund Act of 2010.
• Bottom Line: The final vote may occur later this week or may be postponed until after the July 4 recess.
• Although Home Star is not currently a part of the bill, a very active coalition of pest control and insulation industry interests are making a concerted effort to get Home Star added to the bill before final passage.
• Inside Word: PCIS has learned that Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senate Energy and Natural Resources Chairman Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) are favorably disposed to adding Home Star to the small business bill. However, it appears that Senate Finance Committee Chairman Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) and others, even though they may favor Home Star, are hesitant to add it to the legislation.
• Adding Home Star to the small business jobs bill is, in all likelihood, a long shot. Nonetheless, calls and e-mails to Senators seeking inclusion will be helpful and much appreciated.
• Even if we cannot add Home Star to this bill, a strong showing of support will make it easier as we continue to seek a vehicle that will pass the Senate with Home Star included.
• Please contact your Senators and encourage them to insist that Home Star be added to HR 5297. We have already sent e-mails to the Senate offices with whom we met over the past several weeks. However direct contact from your company will be doubly significant.
• Your Input Vital: A link on this page contains a draft letter that you can use as a guide for your communications with your Senate offices. We encourage you to have the owner or senior staffer in each of your facilities to send a version to their respective Senators. Any locally specific information such as the location and employee figures for your branches is ALWAYS useful. Calls from owner or senior management are also greatly appreciated.
• Please send your letter to the attention of the energy staffer for quicker delivery. E-mail addresses for the each office’s energy staffer are available at the link above.
